List do redakcji jest listem formalnym i dlatego obowiązują tu ściśle określone zasady.

Pisząc taki list:

  • nie używaj skrótowców, czyli pisz I am, a nie I’m;
  • używaj strony biernej;
  • używaj formalnego słownictwa:
    zamiast użyjget obtain
    start commence
    look for seek
    ask for request
    buy purchase
    want require

Phrasal verbs należą do rejestru nieformalnego, staraj się więc ich nie używać w listach formalnych.

Cechy listu do redakcji

  • W nagłówku najczęściej napiszemy: Dear Editor.
  • Odwołujemy się do konkretnego artykułu, np.
    I read the article entitles “Schools” in the 2nd October issue of your newspaper, I’m writing in connection with the article…
  • Piszemy, że zgadzamy się lub nie zgadzamy z tezą artykułu:
    I agree / I could not agree more / I disagree.

Cechy listu formalnego

Zwrot grzecznościowy na początku listu:
Dear Mr Smith, Dear Sir/Madam

Odpowiedni zwrot grzecznościowy na końcu listu.

  • Jeśli znamy adresata (Dear Mr Smith),
    list kończymy zwrotem (Yours sincerely),
  • jeśli go natomiast nie znamy (Dear Sir / Madam)
    Yours faithfully.

List dzielimy na akapity

  • We wstępie określamy cel listu. Możemy zacząć tak:
    I’m writing in connection with…
    I’m writing to inform you / inquire…
  • W rozwinięciu przedstawiamy główne zagadnienie listu. Możemy używać takich zwrotów, jak:
    firstly, secondly, finally, to sum up.
  • W zakończeniu zwykle wyrażamy nadzieję na rychłą odpowiedź czy spotkanie:
    I’m looking forward to hearing from you / to seeing you.

Przykładowy temat

W prasie anglojęzycznej ukazał się ostatnio artykuł na temat przemocy w szkole. Autor sugerował, że przemoc związana jest przede wszystkim z grami komputerowymi. Napisz list do redakcji, w którym:

  • określisz cel listu i podasz tytuł artykułu, którego dotyczy twój komentarz;
  • poinformujesz autora, że problem przemocy w szkole dotyczy również twojego kraju;
  • nie zgodzisz się z autorem artykułu, że to komputery przede wszystkim odpowiadają za taki stan rzeczy;
  • podasz przynajmniej trzy inne przyczyny przemocy w szkole.

Przykładowa praca na zadany temat

Dear Editor,

I am writing in connection with the article which appeared in the Sunday’s issue of your magazine (22 November). The author of the article argues that computer games are the main reason for violence in British schools. The purpose of this letter is to disagree with the author. I would like to support my opinion with the information and observations from Polish schools.
Violence is a worldwide problem. In Poland violence has been recognized as a major issue, too. Last month a girl committed a suicide because she was humiliated by her collegues. Many of her friends do not know what to do when they face violence at school. On the one hand, the raising interest in computers, and, what follows, computer games, can make pupils contact violence in the virtual world. On the other hand, such contact more often than not does not affect students’ behaviour.
I am a great fan of computers and I want to disagree with the opinion that they are the main reason for violence. We cannot blame computers for everything not taking into consideration the fact that they can be used in many different ways – for example to get information. I think the existance of computers is not the main reason for violence. The main reason is that parents do not have time for their children and they do not talk about problems. Pupils do not respect teachers because they are very badly paid in Poland. Young people also find it difficult to have new values and the their parents’ values are simply not adjusted to the modern society.
I hope you can write again about this problem, taking into consideration all these aspects mentioned.
Yours faithfully,

XYZ
