The Second World War was a mid-20th century conflict that engulfed much of the globe and is accepted as the largest and deadliest war in human history. It began in 1939 with the assault on Poland. The war was fought between the Axis Powers and the Allies. Approximately 60 million people died as a result of the war. This figure includes acts of genocide such as the Holocaust and incredibly bloody battles in Europe and the Pacific Ocean, and massive bombings of cities. Atomic weapons, jet aircraft, rockets and radar, the massive use of tanks, submarines, torpedo bombers and destroyer, are only a few of many wartime inventions and new tactics that changed the face of the conflict.
