Every country has something special that people recognize (rozpoznają) all over the world. When you say “Spain”, you think of flamenco and corrida. Say “France” and you think of the Eiffel Tower, romance and… snails. Of course there are many more things that those countries may be proud of!
Great Britain is not a very big country but it is impossible to say that one thing that defines (opisują) it.
England (capital city: London)
Everybody knows what English food is. Most people think that English dishes don’t have too much taste (smaku) and they have to be eaten with sauces. English people love them! Wherever they go they are looking for English bars where they can eat a full english breakfast or Sheppard’s Pie. And yes, fish and chips is very common food on Fridays.
England has much more to offer than food.
Do you know what is located in county (hrabstwo) Wiltshire in south of England, about 13 km from the city of Salisbury? Stonehenge – one of the mysteries of human civilisation. Nobody really knows how and why it was built but for sure it’s a very magical place.
Scotland (capital city: Edinburgh)
Have you ever heard of Scotland Yard? And have you heard of Sherlock Holmes? Although this fictional character (fikcyjna postać) lives in London, his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was Scottish!
But it’s not the only thing that makes Scotland famous all around the world. The Highlands are one of the most beautiful places in the whole world! Incredible Celtic castles (celtyckie zamki), breathtaking views (zapierające dech w piersiach widoki) and fantastic atmosphere bring thousands of tourists here. How about kilts!? The Scots are not the only nation who wear kilts but still the most popular. And who doesn’t know Scottish music and the incredible bagpipes (kobzy)! And you mustn’t forget Nessie! The popular monster from Loch Ness.
Wales (capital city: Cardiff)
Wales is not as well-known as England or Scotland but is just as beautiful. Snowdonia, a mountain range, is visited by crowds of tourists. Welsh are nice people but everybody knows that you have to speak English with them! The Welsh language is a very difficult language and you have to practice a lot to say anything in Welsh (e.g. I like cheese.= Dw i’n hoffi caws).
Wales is also popular for sheep farming which is visible in Welsh cuisine. Unfortunately, there are many nasty (okropne, niegrzeczne) jokes about Welsh people and their sheep.
Ireland
It’s definitely a country of music and beautiful nature! It is said that everybody in Ireland can sing and play musical instruments. Music is so natural for the Irish that they have no problems with becoming (stawanie się) popular artists. U2, Enya, Damien Rice, The Corrs, Sinéad O’Connor, The Cranberries, Westlife, Boy Zone are all Irish and these are only examples!
If you want to see wonders of the nature (cuda natury), go to Ireland. This is the place where you can find the Giant’s Causeway (Grobla Olbrzyma) – an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns (kolumny bazaltowe) resulting from a volcanic eruption (wybuch wulkanu). It’s worth seeing!
The USA (capital city: Washington DC)
Although it’s one country, the variety (różnorodność) of nature is incredible! Almost everybody dreams about a trip around the US. Multi-cultural New York, the beaches of California and celebrities’ paradise Hollywood – these are things that the USA is famous for. There are also many wild places and beautiful national parks: Yellowstone, Grand Canyon – these are places which everybody has heard about.
