RELIGION & DENOMINATIONS

There are more than one hundred registered churches and religious associations in Poland. The biggest numbers belong to the Catholic Church, approximately 95% of the religious segment of Polish society. There are now 40 dioceses and 13 Latin metropolitan archdioceses, and one Byzantine-Ukrainian metropolitan archdiocese. The head of a diocese is its bishop. All the bishops together constitute the Episcopate of Poland. Apart from the Catholic Church there are several large Christian churches. Protestantism, divided into several denominations, is the third largest branch of the Christian religion in Poland. The Jehovah’s Witness Religious Association has a membership of approx. 130 thousand. There are several other religious groups operating in Poland, including the Muslim Religious Union (Islam), the Union of Jewish Religious Communities (the Judaic religion) and quite a number of organisations related to Oriental religions, e.g. Hinduism and Buddhism.

Christianity is a monotheistic religion that recognizes Jesus Christ as its central figure, Lord and Messiah. It is the world’s largest religion which is into three main branches: Catholicism, Eastern Christianity and Protestantism. Though enormous diversity exists in the beliefs of those who self-identify as Christian, it is possible to distinguish general statements which describe the beliefs of a large majority. The Trinity is the belief that God is a single eternal being who exists as three distinct, eternal, and indivisible persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Another one is that salvation from ‘sin and death’ is available through the person and work of Jesus Christ, especially his sacrificial execution and resurrection. Christians also believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, rose from the dead, and ascended into Heaven after appearing to the Apostles. Christian views of the afterlife generally involve heaven and hell, with Catholicism adding an intermediate realm of purgatory. All Christian traditions affirm that Christian practice should include acts of personal piety such as prayer, Bible reading, and attempting to live a moral lifestyle, to include not only obedience to the Ten Commandments. In some denominations (mainly liturgical ones), the service is led by a priest. In others (mainly among Protestants), there is a minister, preacher or pastor.
