During the matura exam the writing task may include writing a film review. At the oral examination you can be asked to state your opinion about a film you have seen.
In both cases the following words and phrases will definitely prove useful:
- a cartoon (kreskówka, film animowany)– a film in which the characters are drawn. Such films are usually amusing and made for children.
- a costume drama (film historyczny) – a historical film;
- a documentary (film dokumentalny) – a film concerned with facts about a given subject;
- a horror (horror) – a film which tells a story about frightening, unnatural events;
- a musical (musical) – a movie with a lot of music and songs in it;
- a romantic comedy (komedia romantyczna) – a comedy where the plot revolves around a love story;
- a science fiction movie (film science fiction) – a film which tells a story about future events, extraterrestial civilisations, the future development of technology, etc.;
- a thriller (dreszczowiec) – a movie with an exciting story full of adventure and suspense, often involving crime;
- a travelogue (film z podróży) – a film the subject of which is travel. Such films relate stories of journeys to different places;
- a war film film wojenny) – a film whose plot focuses on events connected with war;
- a western (western) – a movie dealing with the life in the western US in the late 19th century;

- actor (aktor) – a person who acts in a film or play;
- actress (aktorka) – a female actor;
- cast (obsada) – all actors involved in a movie;
- cameraman (kamerzysta) – a person whose job is to operate a camera during making a film; operator filmowy,
- cineaste (kinoman, osoba zawodowo związana z produkcją filmową) – someone who is extremely interested in the cinema; a person professionally involved in film production;
- co-star (noun) – a film star who plays with another famous actor in a film; gwiazda filmowa grająca w filmie z innym sławnym aktorem
- co-star (verb) – (about a film star) to play a role in a film with another famous actor; (o słynnym aktorze) grać u boku innej gwiazdy filmowej

- scriptwriter (scenarzysta) – a person whose job is to write the text, i.e. the plot and dialogues of a film;

- audience (widownia) – the people who view a film or play;
- to play a role (grać rolę) – to act in a film or play;
- starring/ leading role (główna rola) – the most important role in a film or play;
- title role (rola tytułowa) – the role of the character, whose name is mentioned in the title of film or play;
- character (postać, bohater) – the person who is represented in a movie;
Uwaga! W języku angielskim istnieją dwa odpowiedniki polskiego słowa „bohater”: hero i character.
Rzeczownik hero odnosi się do osób, które wykazały się np. waleczną postawą, to ktoś podziwiany.

- prequel (prekuel) – a film which relates to events preceeding the plot of another, earlier film;
- sequel (kontynuacja) – a film which relates to events which take place later than the plot of an earlier film and continues it;
- trailer (reklama anonsująca film, zapowiedź filmu) – an advertisement of a film which consists of its most eye-catching parts;

During the oral exam
If you happen to become so uptight that you forget what you intended to say or simply have no idea what to add, remember not to stop talking. Fill the moments of hesitation with phrases that naturally occur in such situations. In this way you surely will prove that you can speak English. What is more, the stressful exam situation will become more relaxed and you most probably will be able to continue your speech smoothly and confidently.

Structure your piece of writing/ speech.
Whether you are writing a review or giving a speech, you have to remember about making it clear.
A review must consist of three parts:
- one paragraph long introduction, where you briefly say what kind of film you focus on, specify the title (possibly the director)
- main body, which may consist of 3 or more paragraphs, dealing with:
- the plot
Remember! If you relate a plot of a story, film etc. use the Present Simple tense.
You are not supposed to summarise a plot of a film – just outline the most important facts.

• special effects, photos etc.
The main body of a review must include your opinion about the film.
