The transformations of 1989 brought fundamental change to the political and party system in Poland. The Polish United Workers’ Party, which had previously enjoyed hegemony for its Communist ideology, was obliged to relinquish this status in favour of political pluralism. Nowadays, the political parties in Poland represent a broad range of public consensus. In my opinion the most controversial one is the Self-Defence Party which was established in the late 90s. Its members usually come from rural and provincial areas. Andrzej Lepper, the party leader has made a quick career. Self-Defence is a populist party and its political aim is not clear to me. The party has a political, economic and social programme but it is full of contradictive ideas.
