Team sports
I enjoy team sports very much. I often play football, basketball and volleyball. I like to feel like a real member of the team and help us to score a goal. I like to feel important and useful. I don’t play baseball because I don’t know the rules. The only thing I know is that a player has to hit a ball with a bat and run as fast as possible to touch the base. And I don’t like rugby because it seems too violent to me.
The match has already started and my favourite team is on the pitch. Liverpool has a lot of good players: Dudek as goal keeper, Djibril Cisse as a forward and Steven Gerard as a midfielder. They have also good defenders; the best one is probably Jamie Carragher. I’m sure they’ll win. Oh, no! One of the defenders has been fouled. The referee gave Cisse a yellow card and decided on a free kick just outside the Liverpool penalty area. Two-one, and there’s a chance for an equalizer. If the match ends in a draw at full-time, there will be extra time and then penalties.
Athletics
I really love athletics, especially track events. I like both sprints and long distance running, although I lose my breath after the first lap. But I wouldn’t dare take part in a marathon. I also like the cross-country race. It’s really exhausting but I always feel satisfied if I manage to cover a few kilometres distance. I’m not very fond of the relay race because I always lose a baton. I do like hurdles, although I’m not very good at it.
I enjoy watching athletics, especially when several competitions take place in the stadium at the same time. I like observing athletes when they are preparing to the race, impatiently waiting for the signal of a starter gun. I love both long jump, high jump and the pole vault. I’m not very keen on the discus, the hammer throw and the shot put because it’s sometimes very difficult to see the distance from the audience. But I like the javelin throw.
Water sports
I’m keen on water sports. I was 5 years old when I first went sailing with my parents. I’m a good swimmer so I’m not afraid of the lake even if it’s windy. I know all swimming styles, but my favourite are breast-stroke and crawl. I go sailing whenever it’s possible either with my parents or friends. Last summer I tried windsurfing and found it really exciting. I’m also thinking about water-skiing but I haven’t found a good motorboat yet.
We spent our last summer holidays in Egypt. There are beautiful beaches and ideal conditions for diving. We swam with snorkels for the first week. We could observe the underwater world for hours. After a week we hired a rubber dingy and bought fins, masks and wet suits, and decided to dive in deep water. It was a wonderful experience.
Winter sports
I love skiing and snowboarding and I always spend my winter holidays in the mountains. It’s really exciting to ski down the slope, feel the cold wind on your face and get that surge of adrenaline. I also like skating and I go to the ice rink as often as possible. Although I’m not very good at it I treat it as a good form of entertainment and a way to keep fit. I often watch skating on television and I’m always astonished with the perfection of the top performers.
Gymnastics
In PE (Physical Education) we do all sorts of exercises like gymnastics and aerobics, and play games like basketball, volleyball and handball. Our gym is well equipped so we can do horse vault, ring and horizontal bar exercises. Our teacher also introduces some elements of judo and karate but I don’t think we’ll be any good at it.
Combat sports
The only sport disciplines I never watch are boxing and wrestling. It doesn’t make sense to me that two men enter the ring, put on their boxing gloves and fight until one of them is knocked out or has a broken nose. Wrestling doesn’t seem better to me: two wrestlers lying on a mat, trying to keep a hold of each other, sweating and making strange noises. I don’t understand why people watch it.
Tennis
Venus and Serena Williams are my favourite tennis players. I love to see them on the court and I try to watch every tournament that they take part in. Serena lost her last game but I think some of the umpire’s decisions were not fair, and he favoured Serena’s opponent. The young Russian player who won was so happy that she threw her racket high in the air. But I must admit that she has a very good service.
Equestrian sports
I can’t help laughing when I see my father horse riding. He’s always as stiff as a board and I think chess would be a better sport for him. My mother is a far better rider. She can even jump over fences. When she is in the saddle she looks like a real jockey.
Cycling
I can’t go cycling today because my bike is broken. I have to change a wheel and repair the brakes. I know I should buy a new bike because this one is quite old and has a very uncomfortable saddle. I think I’ll buy a mountain bike next year but I haven’t got enough money yet.
Car races
Sorry, I can’t talk to you now. The Formula 1 race is about to start. My favourite racing driver is on his favourite circuit so I’m sure he’ll win. He’s currently leading the champion table. Oh, they’re off. I’ll talk to you later.
Cricket and polo
Cricket is a popular sport in Britain although it’s not known in other European countries. It’s a game played by two teams of eleven people on a mown grass field with special bats and wickets. The cricketers usually wear white clothes. Another typically British sport is polo, a discipline reserved mainly for the elite. It’s a ball game played on horseback with mallets.
If you are not good at sport and prefer going to the cinema or chatting with friends in your leisure time I’d advise you to take up billiards. It’s a good discipline for lazy people who can spend some time at a billiard table, talking to friends, drinking beer and trying to hit a billiard ball with a cue.
