Look for a Job

There comes a time in your life when you have to start looking for a job. You may want to earn some money for your personal expenses (books and records, cinema- or theatre-going, discos, etc.). Perhaps you need to earn money to pay your tuition for university courses. Or maybe you want to rent a flat and start off an independent life. You may look for a job during your summer holiday, or try to combine it with your classes. Anyway, it’s always good to know how to go about looking for a job. Here are some practical tips.

First you need to select your future employment. According to your preferences and personal situation, you may want to have a job that would be:

full-time or part-time;
manual or clerical;
working with people or working with machines;
indoor or outdoor;
with regular hours or flexible hours;
well-paid for much work or reasonably paid for less work.

Once you have decided what jobs would be of some interest to you, you can start looking at ads in newspapers. You may come across such inserts:

Finally you will be asked to come to an interview. Here is some advice on what to do before and during an interview:

Before you go, you need to prepare yourself by thinking about your skills and goals, finding out more about the company, and reviewing your past education and jobs.
You need to dress in an adequate, conservative manner; not too extravagant and not too shabby.
As first impressions last long, remember to greet the interviewer(s) and try to behave as natural as possible.

Try to establish rapport with the interviewer(s) by a firm handshake, direct eye contact, and talking in a straightforward, unambiguous way.

Answer all the questions you’re asked exhaustively but try not to overwhelm the interviewer(s) with your talkativeness.
